Lynn Alvarez squares off against Sofia Bagerhdai at WSOF 10

The card for WSOF: Branch vs. Taylor, June 21, keeps getting better.

World Series of Fighting announced that Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez would face Sofia Bagherdai a women’s strawweight bout.

Alvarez returned to action back in Janurary with a submission win – her fifth overall – over Amber Stautzenberger, just 45 seconds into the first round. Lights Out also has the distinction of being the first fighter to finish Michelle Waterson. Back in 2007, she submitted “The Karate Hottie” with a guillotine choke in the first round. Prior to her las fight, Alvarez had back-to-back losses – both of which were against current or former world champions.

Bagherdai finds herself in a similar situation. The fighter from Upland, Calif., is returning to action after an almost two-year absence. Her she defeated Sarah Maloy in 2012 by TKO.

On paper it appears that Bagherdai may have the edge when it comes to striking while Alvarez has the edge when it comes to submissions. I think Lights Out’s experience against high caliber opponents will also help her in the fight, but Bagherdai may have learned some new things during her time away from the cage.

Jessica Aguilar will defend her WSOF Women’s Strawweight title against Emi Funjino. Whoever wins between Alvarez and Bagherdai could be in line for a title shot down the road.
