Ronny Markes first debuted in the UFC in 2011, after achieving a record of 11-1 fighting in various promotions in his native Brazil. First competing at light heavyweight, Markes was successful in his debut, defeating Karlos Vemola via unanimous decision.
Markes then moved down to middleweight to compete in his next 4 fights, defeating Aaron Simpsons and Andrew Craig to extend his career win streak to 7 fights. But Markes followed that with back to back losses–first to Yoel Romero by knockout, and then missing weight and losing to heavy underdog Thiago Santos via TKO in under 1 minute.
The back to back losses, in addition to missing the middleweight limit by 4 lbs, was enough to warrant his release by the UFC in March of 2014.
The 26 year old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, now joins a light heavyweight division in WSOF that includes the likes of Tyrone Spong, Angel DeAnda, Mike Kyle, and DJ Linderman.
