Silver medialist Sara McMann and former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman were scheduled to face off in August 2013. Issues would force McMann to withdraw from the fight and Kaufman would be pulled from the event and end up facing Jessica Eye later in the year.
Since then Kaufman has gone 1-0 with one no contest in the octagon while McMann suffered a first-round TKO loss against UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in their title bout back in February.
Now the former title contender wants to face Kaufman, however the former Strikeforce champ is looking at Cat Zingano or Miesha Tate for her next fight.
When the McMann vs. Kaufman match was announced last year I was looking forward to watching it, mainly because both opponents would have been great tests for each other – Kaufman with her powerful hands vs. McMann and her grappling skills.
Kaufman has gone 5-1 in her last six fights and is one of top 5 in the UFC women’s bantamweight division, however I think facing McMann would give the former Strikeforce champion a boost up the ladder and even solidify her claim for a title match. It would also show fans how far Kaufman has come in improving her ground game.
As for McMann, a win over Kaufman would not only put her back on the path to title contention, but also give her the biggest win of her career.
Even though this match was a clash of styles, it would be a good addition to a pay per view or Fox card in the future.
