Clay Guida vs. Dennis Bermudez added to UFC on FOX 12

A fight between top 10 ranked featherweights has been added to UFC on FOX 12, as Clay Guida will fight Dennis Bermudez in a pivotal clash. The card will be held at SAP Centre (formerly HP Pavilion) in San Jose, CA. on July 26, with the headliner of the card yet to be confirmed. Elsewhere on the card, light heavyweights Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira square off, and lightweight contenders Josh Thomson and Michael Johnson are slated to fight on a card emerging as one of the most important of 2014.

Clay Guida recently rebounded from losing three in four, defeating highly touted Japanese star Tatsuya Kawajiri at UFC Fight Night 39. Guida has gone 2-1 since dropping to featherweight, with a win over Hatsu Hioki in his debut in the division, with a loss to the #1 contender Chad Mendes in between. ‘The Carpenter’ is known for his tremendous cardio, great footwork and his wrestling credentials, three strengths that he showed in his unanimous decision over the aforementioned Kawajiri.

Now ranked #7 in the division and 11-8 in the UFC, Guida holds notable wins over the current lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, as well as lightweight contenders Nate Diaz and Rafael dos Anjos. If Guida can get past TUF 14 runner-up Dennis Bermudez, he could be just a win or two away from finally getting a shot at UFC gold.

Bermudez, however, is currently on a six fight win streak which has put him in the #10 spot in the division. The run of form was a surprise to many, after losing three in a row prior to the streak, including his UFC debut in a losing effort against Diego Brandao for the TUF 14 crown. With wins over Max Holloway and Steven Siler amongst others, Bermudez has emerged as a contender in the stacked 145lbs division, and an impressive victory over Guida could be enough to catapult ‘The Menace’ into the upper echelon of the division.

With a plethora of fun featherweight match-ups in the pipeline in 2014, both fighters will need to make a statement in order to emerge from the rest of the pack. Chad Mendes will fight Jose Aldo for the title next, with Conor McGregor, Ricardo Lamas, Cub Swanson and Jeremy Stephens all in action within the next couple of months.

The headliner for the UFC on FOX 12 is expected to be announced within the next few weeks, with the card going down on July 26 at SAP Centre in San Jose, CA.
