UFC’s return to San Jose, CA. is shaping up to be a fun card, with FOX Sports reporting that a lightweight tilt between Jorge Masvidal and Daron Cruickshank has been added to UFC on FOX 12. The July 26 card will be held at SAP Centre (formerly HP Pavilion), with the headliner of the card yet to be announced. Masvidal vs. Cruickshank joins a heap of intriguing bouts that have already been announced for the card, including a light heavyweight bout between Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, lightweights Josh Thomson and Michael Johnson squaring off, and a featherweight fight between Clay Guida and Dennis Bermudez.
Jorge Masvidal bounced back from a loss to #11 ranked Rustam Khabilov in November, defeating fellow ex-Strikeforce contender Pat Healy at UFC on FOX 11 in April. That win put Masvidal into the #14 spot in the 155lbs division, and ‘Gamebred’ has showed sound improvements since signing with the UFC from now-defenct Strikeforce in 2013, going 3-1 inside the Octagon over the last 10 months. A win over Cruickshank will be another step towards challenging the upper echelon fighters in the division, after his close loss to Khabilov was his sole setback since joining the UFC.
Daron Cruickshank has impressed since appearing on The Ultimate Fighter: Live, going 5-2 in his seven hitherto official UFC appearances. He will come into the fight with Masvidal off the back of a two fight win streak, with both being creative head kicks leading to TKO victories over Mike Rio and Erik Koch respectively. The latter was perhaps the most impressive victory of Cruickshank’s career, with Koch a former top contender in the featherweight division and looking rejuvenated since returning to 155lbs. ‘The Detroit Superstar’ was a +400 underdog in the fight with Koch, but his first round knockout win showed that such odds were undeserved.
UFC on FOX 12 will be held at SAP Centre in San Jose, CA. on July 26, with a headliner for the card expected to be announced within the next few weeks.
