It would be an understatement to say that current UFC Bantamweight champion Renan Barao has been on a tear in the UFC since he debuted for the organization back in 2011. Before that he was winning in other promotions including Jungle Fight, Shooto and World Extreme Cagefighting.
Barao is scheduled to defend his title against T.J. “The Viper” Dillashaw at tomorrow’s UFC 173 pay per view. This will be his second title defense as bantamweight champion.
But the Brazilian fighter has had gold around his waist since 2012. Prior to becoming the undisputed 135-pound champion he was the interim title holder, waiting to fight former – then current – champion Dominick Cruz. One of Barao’s interim title defenses was against former WEC Bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland at UFC 165.
Wineland had back-to-back wins over Brad Pickett and Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen. Barao had come off of a successful title defense over Michael MacDonald in February of that year.
