Antonio Carlos jr. won the heavyweight finale at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale over Vitor Miranda via unanimous decision. With Carlos jr. representing Team Silva and Miranda representing Team Sonnen, Carlos jr. claimed redemption for Silva as the only one of four TUF finalists representing Wanderlei.
Carlos jr. dominated his opponent for the full three rounds and more than deserved to win the TUF heavyweight tournament. At just 24, he is a big prospect after impressing during his stint in the house. He is expected to drop down to light heavyweight next, and it will be interesting to see what he can do at 205lbs.
Here is how the fight played out:
Carlos jr. is just 24, while Miranda is 11 years his elder. The former has a 4-0 record and latter has gone 10-3 respectively. Could the experience edge of Miranda play a role, or will the younger fighter prevail?
Round 1 – Carlos jr. taking the centre and pushing forward, landing a nice right but eating leg kicks along the way. Nice combination by Carlos jr. but Miranda responds well but getting the clinch. Carlos jr. turns the position around and has Miranda against the cage now. Big knee by Carlos but it hits the groin of Miranda, a separation now to allow Miranda time to recover. They resume and Carlos jr. apologises. He’s stalking Miranda down so far, and lands a big kick there. Miranda warns him off with a front kick. Big leg kick then a huge combination followed by a takedown! Great sequence there from Carlos jr. He landed a head kick and multiple punches before mixing it up with a takedown. Miranda makes his way up but Carlos jr. stays on him and drags him down again, landing some short shots. Miranda is up once again, a nice knee from the clinch by Carlos jr. Short elbows as they separate. Stiff jab by Carlos jr. there. Leg kick is checked by Carlos jr., and again. Miranda having little success in this opening round. Couple of nice shots, then a big body kick by Antonio. Nice left as Miranda came in with the leg kick. Front kick attempted by Miranda. Body kick misses also. Miranda has a small cut, but nothing significant. Head kick avoided by Carlos jr., before he lands a nice combination at the end of the round. Good round by the 24 year old.

Round 2 – Miranda hit Carlos jr. with a leg kick while he tried to touch gloves, that’s a bum move. Leg kick is caught by Carlos jr. who gets the takedown and is in half guard here. Great work there by the 24 year old. He’s smothering from the top and this will really tire Miranda. He almost gets mount, and now he does. This is trouble for Miranda with 3:30 left in the second round. He has lots of time to work and a lot left in the gas tank it seems. He gets side control instead after Miranda threatens the escape. Half guard now though. Well done by Miranda so far. Carlos jr. going for a heel hook, but Miranda escapes and is now on his feet kicking the feet of Carlos jr. Odd strategy and he’s doing zero damage here. He drops into the guard of Carlos jr. who is controlling the arms of Miranda and potentially working on a submission from the bottom. He has the triangle now, but Miranda escapes and gets into side control. Good work again defensively there. Carlos jr. escapes the position and gets Miranda against the cage in the clinch. 20 seconds now. They separate, big combination from Carlos jr. who attempts the takedown at the end of the round. Another in the books for Carlos jr., but a lot closer than the first.

Round 3 – Carlos jr. pushing forward and landing combinations in the third, while Miranda trying to establish his leg kick. Big double leg takedown from Carlos jr. who is 4 minutes away from winning the TUF title. He’s holding Miranda against the cage but trying his utmost to drag him away from the position into a more central spot. Carlos jr. gives Miranda some space and uses it to clasp his hands together and slaps him into a more central position, very smart tactic and great work from the 24 year old. Miranda has no answer for his grappling dominance thusfar, with Carlos jr. unloading with nice short ground and pound from half guard. Full guard now but Carlos jr. is cruising to a decision hitherto. He postures up momentarily and lands a couple of blows. Miranda gets to the fence and works his way up. Miranda tries to go for a judo throw but Carlos jr. uses it to his advantage and gets the back. Body triangle now. Less than a minute remaining and Carlos jr. is in a great spot to win this fight. Miranda surely knows he is going to lose now. He has full mount and lands a couple of stiff elbows. Side control now. Full mount once again but good hip work to recover half guard. Great performance from Carlos jr.

Solid performance from Carlos jr., the new heavyweight champion of TUF Brazil 3. Pure dominance and well-rounded one of that.
