Featherweight Cole Miller has been forced out of his main event fight with Conor McGregor due to an injured right thumb, being replaced by Diego Brandao. Miller and McGregor had an interesting feud, exchanging words for several months, though a potential fight between the two has been put on hold. The fight headlines UFC Fight Night 46 at O2 World in Dublin, Ireland.
Diego Brandao has had a rough patch recently, some of which being self inflicted. Missing weight by 5.5lbs for his fight with Dustin Poirier, Brandao put in a poor performance against the American and was quickly dispatched of by Poirier in the first round. He was then matched up with Will Chope for a fight at UFC Fight Night 38 in Brazil, but a story arose about Chope being discharged from the US Air Force after inflicting domestic abuse on his ex-wife.
Chope was subsequently released and Brandao was left without an opponent, a tough feat for someone who had a full training camp and weighed in for the fight. The official cancellation of the bout came just hours before the event started, leaving Brandao raring to go.
He was then given UFC newcomer Brian Ortega for a fight at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale, which went down on May 31. Diego Brandao suffered an injury just a few days prior to the fight, and was forced to drop out, leaving the UFC with an inadequate amount of time to find a replacement for Ortega.
Now, Brandao may finally get a bit of luck, stepping into his first UFC main event in hostile territory. He will face featherweight contender Conor McGregor in Dublin, McGregor’s hometown, and will look to upset the odds with a win. McGregor has become one of the most popular figures in the promotion despite fighting just twice in the UFC, and has built a huge following in the process.
With a win, the Irish prospect is expected to face Brandao’s last opponent, Dustin Poirier, after both fighters have – like with Miller – exchanged a series of words. There has also been a run-in between McGregor and the Brazilian some months ago, though this was not quite the same heated scenario as with McGregor and Miller or Poirier.
UFC Fight Night 46 is headlined by the featherweight contest between Conor McGregor and Diego Brandao. It will be held at O2 World in Dublin, Ireland.
