There will be a newly crowned welterweight champion when the newly signed Ben Saunders makes his Titan FC debut against Matt Riddle for the vacant title at Titan FC 29 on August 22nd, at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina. First reported by MMAFighting.com, the fight will headline the card airing on CBS Sports Network.
Ben Saunders (16-6-2) will be coming into this title fight nearly a full calender year out of action, last fighting in September and suffering a knockout loss to current Bellator welterweight champion, Douglas Lima, in the finals of the Bellator tournament. Saunders left Bellator shortly there after and found a new home, signing with Titan FC in April. The former UFC welterweight went 4-3 in the promotion before joining Bellator in 2011, and going 7-3–including two tournament finals.
Matt Riddle (8-3, 2 NC) considered retirement after being released by the UFC in 2013, but returned to the sport after a one year layoff, successfully defeating Michael Kuiper via 2nd round guillotine choke, in his Titan FC debut in February.
Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons was originally scheduled to be Matt Riddle’s opponent for the welterweight title bout, but CEO of Titan FC, Jeff Aronson tells CagePages.com that “Pele” is having visa issues with his passport. And instead will be challenging the winner the of this bout for the welterweight title at a later date.
