ESPN holds an annual awards show called the ESPYs (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award), to recognize and honor the achievements in sports, both individual and team, in a given year. While MMA is ways away from being considered a main stream sport, their athletes have gotten recognition over the recent years in certain ESPY categories.
This upcoming 2014 ESPYS, which airs on July 16, continues that trend with three MMA fighters being nominated for 3 different individual awards.
UFC Bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey is nominated for the Best Female Athlete ESPY—alongside basketball players Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart, and alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin.
UFC Middleweight champion, Chris Weidman is nominated for the Best Upset for his knockout win over Anderson Silva at UFC 162—other nominees include UConn winning the NCAA Basketball National Championship, and Mercer’s defeat of Duke in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.
And finally, in the Best Fighter category, two UFC champions: Jon Jones and Ronda Rousey are nominated along with boxers Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquaio, and Andre Ward. An award that an MMA fighter has never won in its 6-year running—Mayweather has won 4 times, Pacquaio twice.
