UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will look to defend her title for the fourth time against tough Canadian contender Alexis Davis this Saturday at UFC 175. The pair will square off in the co-main event of the card, which is held at Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, NV.
Ronda Rousey has been the frontrunner of female MMA since successfully campaigning for the UFC to expand their horizons and include female fighters on their roster. Since debuting in the Octagon at UFC 157, a lot has happened for ‘Rowdy’.
Her popularity has soared, leading to a number of movie roles including a lead role in The Expendables 2 – so much so that Dana White has described the 135-pounder as the biggest pay-per-view draw in the promotion’s history.
Rousey has also shown tremendous improvements in her stand-up in recent performances. After going 7-0 with all of her wins coming via first round armbar, Rousey has since been taken into the third round by Meisha Tate, and scored her first TKO win over Sara McMann. In the former, this shows the toughness of some of her competition, and in the latter, this shows that – at 27 – Rousey is only getting better.
Her latest challenge comes in the form of Canadian 135-pounder Alexis Davis, a 29 year-old who has been in-and-around the top of the division for several years. It was only a matter of time before Davis and Rousey’s paths crossed, and this will finally occur at UFC 175.
Alexis Davis has racked up three UFC wins, with the most notable coming against former title contender Liz Carmouche and top prospect Jessica Eye. ‘Ally-Gator’ has more than earned her shot at Ronda Rousey, with five straight wins and an impressive 16 wins in 21 fights as a professional. Davis is a black belt in both Japanese and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which denotes that the ground battles between herself and Rousey could be very interesting.
