UFC Fight Night 49 has added two interesting bouts, with welterweights Demian Maia and Mike Pyle set to square off, and middleweights Francis Carmont and Thales Leites paired together. Both Maia and Pyle are ranked in the top 15 of the 170lbs division, while Carmont and Leites are ranked at 185lbs.
Demian Maia rebounded from a recent two fight losing skid with a decision win over Alexander Yakovlev in May, a win which took his overall UFC record to 13-6. Since dropping down to welterweight, Maia went on a three fight winning streak which put him in line for a title shot, before successive losses to Jake Shields and Rory MacDonald halted the Brazilian’s momentum. With his fourth win at 170lbs, Maia is looking to regain contendership status by getting his second victory in a row.
Mike Pyle, now 38 years of age, is a guy that is well versed on the ground and the jiu-jitsu exchanges between Pyle and Maia are going to be very interesting to watch. With 8 wins in his last 10 Octagon bouts, Pyle has compiled an impressive 9-4 record inside the UFC and is currently ranked #12 in the welterweight division. His sole setbacks have come against top competition, and he will look to add to his resumé with a win over Demian Maia in August.
Though on paper a surprising match-up, Francis Carmont and Thales Leites are very close in the rankings. While Carmont has dropped his last two, Leites has won six straight including three UFC bouts, though the former is ranked #12 and the latter ranked #15 at middleweight.
Carmont was recently on an 11 fight winning streak, including winning his opening six Octagon bouts, which put him in the upper echelon at 185lbs. However, after a decision loss to Jacare Souza, Carmont was unable to re-find his recent form, dropping a second straight against CB Dollaway in May. Looking to put himself back on track, the Frenchman will be a man on a mission in his bout with Thales Leites.
Leites, a former middleweight contender, has showed his improved stand-up to go with his world class jiu-jitsu in recent fights. The Brazilian has gone 3-0 since returning to the UFC, and has won 9 of his last 10 bouts, which includes avenging the only loss of that impressive run. Looking to climb his way back to the top of the ladder, a win over Carmont could be enough to place Leites in the top 10 of the middleweight division.
UFC Fight Night 47 will be held at BOK Centre in Tulsa, OK on August 23, headlined by a lightweight bout between Benson Henderson and Rafael dos Anjos. Both of the bouts featured in this article are expected to take place on the main card, though the official bout order is yet to be confirmed.
