“The Queen of Spades” Shayna Baszler is more than ready to step foot into the Octagon for the first time in her professional career. Unfortunately, she’ll have to wait just a little bit longer.
UFC officials have announced that bout between Baszler and undefeated prospect Bethe “Pitbull” Correira will now take place at UFC 177, Aug. 30, in Sacramento, Calif. The rematch between UFC Bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champion Renan Barao is scheduled to headline the event.
The fight was originally set for UFC 176, Aug. 2, but that event has been postponed after UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo – who was scheduled to defend his title against Chad Mendes – pulled out of the title bout due to injury.
Baszler was scheduled to make her Octagon debut against Sarah Kaufman back in April, however an injury forced her to pull out of the fight. Since then the anticipation for her UFC debut has been building, especially after Correia defeated Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke, Baszler’s training partner and Four Horsewomen stable mate, earlier this year.
Correira has been on a roll since she made her debut back in 2012. Prior to her victory over Duke, the Pitbull defeated Julie Kedzie in what would be the “Fireball’s” last bout.
The Queen of Spades is used to going up against top competition. She’s won five of her last seven fights with victories over Sarah D’Alelio, Alexis Davis and Elaina Maxwell. She appeared on “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate” where she was eliminated in the first round of the women’s 135-pound tournament against eventual champion Julianna Pena.
Still, she hasn’t fought professionally since she started training with her stable – comprised of Duke, Ronda Rousey and Marina Shafir – and for all we know her skills and overall fight game may have improved 10-fold.
But like Baszler, MMA fans will have wait until August to find out.
