When Ashley Cummins makes her return to MMA, she’ll have a tough test ahead of her.
Cummins – also known to fans as “Smashley” – will take on Mexico’s Alexa Grasso, Sept. 6, at Invicta FC 8 in a strawweight bout.
Cummins’ last two fights in the Invicta cage haven’t gone her way. She dropped a decision to Emily Kagan at Invicta FC 6 in 2013. Prior to that fight she lost to Joanne Calderwood at Invicta FC 3. Cummins went 3-0 in her first three bouts with wins over Sofia Bagherdai, Stephanie Frausto and Chelsea Colarelli.
Grasso is currently 4-0 with three first-round knockouts. Her Lobo Gym teammate Irene Aldana will also be making her debut in the Invicta cage against Peggy Morgan.
This should be a good contest between two rising prospects. Although Cummins will have the support of the crowd, Grasso could wow the fans if she can score another knockout.
As for Cummins, if she can score a victory and get back on the winning track, she could find herself in title contention down the road.
