#8 ranked lightweight Michael Johnson has suffered an undisclosed injury, taking him out of his bout with Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX 12 later this month. Stepping up to take his place will be Bobby Green, who was scheduled to fight Abel Trujillo at UFC Fight Night 47 in August.
Winner of seven straight including three Octagon wins, Bobby Green has impressed in his recent performances, earning him the #13 rank in the 155lbs division. However, Green has been forced out of his last two proposed bouts with Abel Trujillo and Jim Miller due to injury, and the re-booking of the fight with Trujillo has also been cancelled. Instead of facing the dangerous ‘Killa’, Green will instead face his highest profile test to date in the form of #3 ranked Josh Thomson.
A former Strikeforce titleholder, Thomson has wins over the likes of Gilbert Melendez and Nate Diaz on a stacked resumé. Though he has lost three in five, the nature of Thomson’s last two losses have showed that he is still a top contender in the lightweight division. In his close split decision losses against the aforementioned Melendez and former champ Benson Henderson, the judging criteria was once again criticised by fans who felt Thomson did enough to get the nod.
After knocking out Nate Diaz last April, Josh Thomson was set to fight for the UFC lightweight strap against Anthony Pettis in December, though the champ was forced to pull out due to injury. Instead of staying on the sidelines, ‘The Punk’ decided to keep active, though this proved to be his downfall after losing to Benson Henderson in a five round split decision. Now on the search of his fourth UFC victory, Thomson faces fellow Strikeforce import Bobby Green.
The lightweight tilt will open the main card of UFC on FOX 12, while Abel Trujillo will face off against a replacement opponent at UFC Fight Night 47 in Maine. UFC on FOX 12 is headlined by top welterweight contenders Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown, and will be held at SAP Centre in San Jose, CA on July 26.
