Following his 2nd round knockout victory over Nick Newell at WSOF 11 on NBC, the WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje (12-0) has found out who his next opponent and challenger to his title will be. Kenny Rice and Bas Rutten spoke to WSOF president Ray Sefo and announced to Gaethje on Inside MMA that he will be facing Melvin Guillard (32-13-2, 2 NC) in his next bout.
The 25 year old, Gaethje has been WSOF’s fastest rising star, winning all 5 of his bouts inside the promotion by TKO or KO. Gaethje won the inaugural WSOF lightweight title by defeating Richard Patishnock at WSOF 8 and made his first successful defense against the aforementioned Newell last weekend.
“I’ve trained with Melvin before, you guys are in for a show. He’s the most explosive 155lber in the world,” Gaethje said of his opponent. “I’m not going to submit Melvin, I’m going to knock Melvin out.”
Melvin Guillard successfully debuted on the same card as Newell, defeating Gesias Cavalcante by TKO in the 2nd round at WSOF 11. The over 50-fight veteran joined WSOF after being released by the UFC following a 9-year stint, and achieving a 12-9, 1 NC—but never contending for the lightweight title. Guillard now has a chance to win the lightweight title inside WSOF in just his 2nd fight.
