Another chapter of the MMA history books was written this last week as undefeated Brazilian fighter and BJJ world champion Claudia Gadelha met Finnish fighter Tina Lähdemäki in the first strawweight fight in UFC history.
After three rounds of action, Gadelha clinched the decision to remain undefeated and improve her record to 12-0. Although an impressive victory like this could warrant a title shot, Gadelha will have to wait as the first UFC Women’s Strawweight champion will not be determined until the end of “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Pettis vs. Team Melendez,” which doesn’t premier until September.
Although she will not be on the show, I think Gadelha should be considered for a title match and face the winner of “TUF 20.”
Gadelha was one of the first strawweights to be signed to a UFC contract and was scheduled to appear on the show, however she turned down being on the show because she felt she couldn’t make the quick weight cuts.
The Brazilian fighter has amazing grappling – perhaps the best of the strawweight division. Although some critics may say that her striking is not up to par with other 115-pounders, she trains with some of the best strikers in the world at Nova União including current UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
Gadelha may have to wait until the end of the year to fight for the UFC 115-pound title, but if she can stay healthy and win her next bout – assuming the promotion throws one her way before the “TUF 20″ finale – she could have a chance to fight for some UFC gold.
