Since our last instalment in July 2014, a lot has happened in the world of mixed martial arts. Justin Gaethje, Jon Fitch and Melvin Guillard were all victorious at WSOF 11 on July 5, with UFC 175 also taking place on that date. Inside the Octagon, Chris Weidman defended his title for the second time in a memorable five-round battle with highly touted Lyoto Machida. On the same card, Ronda Rousey blitzed through Canadian contender Alexis Davis in just 16 seconds. Urijah Faber was also victorious on the undercard.
Frankie Edgar sent BJ Penn into retirement with a dominant TKO win, Donald Cerrone got his fourth straight win, with Edson Barboza, John Lineker and Rick Story getting back to winning ways on the same card. Conor McGregor returned with a first round TKO over Diego Brandao in impressive fashion on a card that also saw Ian McCall put his name in the title mix with a decision over Brad Pickett. Gunnar Nelson remained undefeated with a submission over Zak Cummings.
On the most recent notable card of July, Robbie Lawler earned another title shot with a decision win over Matt Brown in a spectacular bout. Anthony Johnson and Dennis Bermudez put on standout performances, putting themselves in the mix for a top 5 place at light heavyweight and featherweight respectively. Bobby Green upset Josh Thomson with a split decision victory, and Jorge Masvidal continued his progress with a decision over Daron Cruickshank.
