A light heavyweight tilt between top ranked Glover Teixeira and Phil Davis has been added to the UFC 179 card. The bout had been rumoured for some time, with sources stating that the two had agreed terms, and now the bout has been confirmed for the October 25 card at the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Teixeira confirmed the news to PVT on Friday, per MMAFighting‘s Guilherme Cruz.
Glover Teixeira will fight for the first time since losing his bout with the champion Jon Jones at UFC 172, getting outclassed for much of the fight. Known by hardcore fans for years, Teixeira had lived up to the hype coming into the fight with Jones, though fell shot in his title bout. 22-3 as a professional, the Brazilian has defeated the likes of Ryan Bader, James Te Huna and Rampage Jackson in a 5-1 streak in the UFC.
Teixeira lost his first fight in nine years in April, and will look to get back to winning ways against a top ranked fighter in Phil Davis. Ranked #4 in the division, a couple more wins could be enough to see Teixeira in the title mix once again but – at 34 years of age – a loss will be fatal.
Phil Davis lost for the first time in five fights at UFC 172, losing a one-sided decision against Anthony Johnson. With wins over fighters like Alexander Gustafsson and Lyoto Machida, Davis has proved to be one of the top light heavyweights in the world, but has – on two occasions – fallen short when it matters most. A win over a man ranked two places above him in Glover Teixeira would put Davis back on the right path to a shot at the title.
At 29, Davis remains one of the top light heavyweights in the world, though showed in his fight with Johnson that he struggles against power punchers. He will face just that in Teixeira, who is known for his boxing pedigree.
UFC 179 is headlined by the rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes for the featherweight title, with Teixeira vs. Davis expected to take place on the main card of the event.
