Flyweight contenders John Moraga and Justin Scoggins have agreed to fight at UFC Fight Night 50 on September 5. The card will be headlined by a middleweight bout between Jacare Souza and Gegard Mousasi at Foxwoods Revel Casino in Ledyard, CT.
#5 ranked John Moraga has gone 3-2 since signing with the UFC, with his two losses coming against the champion Demetrious Johnson and #1 ranked John Dodson. After finishing his first two fights inside the Octagon, Moraga has struggled for form, losing two of his last three and his only win in that time coming via close split decision.
In the flyweight division, it doesn’t take a long string of wins to get back into title contention, and the road to the title starts here for Moraga if he can get back to his old ways. The 30 year-old has an impressive 14-3 record, and has some of the best power in the division; if he can demonstrate that power against a highly touted Justin Scoggins, big things could be on the horizon for the Arizona native.
Justin Scoggins has earned the reputation of one of the brightest stars in the 125lbs division. At just 22 years of age, Scoggins won his opening two UFC fights, before – like Moraga – going the distance against Dustin Ortiz. However, unlike Moraga, Scoggins was on the wrong end of a close split decision, which is the first defeat of ‘Tank’s’ career.
The American Top Team product will get straight back on track if he can get past the #5 ranked Moraga, and an impressive win will put him close to title contention. Due to his young age, Scoggins has a lot of room for improvement, which is a daunting thought for fellow 125-pounders considering the way in which he entered the promotion.
Though yet to be confirmed, the bout between Moraga and Scoggins is expected to take place on the main card of UFC Fight Night 50. The official order of the event will be finalised in the weeks leading up to the September 5 card.
