Sometimes the UFC and other fight promotions weigh in several factors before deciding on No. 1 contender for a title. Other times they’ll book a title eliminator bout based on performances from two fighters. In this case it may be the latter.
To quote Adele, rumor has it that the UFC is planning on a title eliminator bout between Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Claudia Gadelha and Polish powerhouse Joanna Jędrzejczyk. According to reports, the winner of this fight would face the UFC Women‘s Strawweight champion which will be determined in “The Ultimate Fighter 20“ finale later this year.
Both Gadelha and Jedrzejcyk are coming off of impressive performances in their octagon debuts. Gadelha picked up a decision win over Finnish fighter Tina Lähdemäki while Jędrzejczyk scored a win over Juliana Lima via decision. Not only did both competitors wow fans in their first forays in the octagon, but also they caught the eye of UFC President Dana White.
Some feel that Jędrzejczyk isn’t ready someone with Gadelha’s experience, but MMA is a sport where having more fights doesn’t necessarily make you better – especially if most of your past opponents are not high caliber fighters. I’m not saying that Gadelha has fought “tomato cans” but just because you have more wins doesn’t make you better than your opponent before the bell rings.
I think having a title eliminator bout is also good way to create some buzz for the women’s 115-pound division before the “TUF” season begins. However, this is all just speculation and a fight has not been scheduled. The UFC could change it’s mind on a whim for whatever reason. One example would be if the “TUF” finals result in a close or controversial decision and the UFC brass may decides to have a rematch between those two competitors.
Still, I think Gadelha and Jedrzejcyk would be a good match whether or not a title shot is on the line.
