Be warned, this is not for the faint of heart. Earlier in the week, Joe Riggs had to pull out of his scheduled UFC return bout against Paulo Thiago at UFC Fight Night 51 on September 15th. The reason? An accidental self-inflicted gun shot to the left hand and leg of Riggs, while he was cleaning his pistol.
The result of the disarming of his firearm led to severe injuries in the form of a huge hole in his left hand and left leg (which can be seen in the video below).
“My hand was smoking. I was laying on the ground and my hand was smoking,” Riggs said. “The first thing I said was ‘what’s that smell?'”
“I tried to calm down, and shake it off. And then I got up and went to grab the door and the door knob went through my hand. And that’s when I knew I was done.”
Riggs needed a total of 21 screws, 6 rods, and 2 plates to repair his left hand, which is now heavy wrapped.
The former WEC middleweight champion last fought in the UFC in December of 2006–suffering a loss to Diego Sanchez. Since then, Joe ‘Diesel’ Riggs has fought for the likes of Strikeforce and Bellator–most recently winning the inaugural season of Bellator’s Fight Master reality TV show.
Riggs was set to make his debut on a 6-fight win streak including his first victory in Bellator, the Fight Master final over Mike Bronzoulis in his last fight. However, now because of this incident, his UFC return will have to be put on hold. Riggs is hopeful for a return to the UFC in December.
TMZ obtained the footage of Joe Riggs’s gun shot wound (warning: it is graphic).
