Zoila Frausto Gurgel looks to capture Muay Thai gold

Zoila Frausto Gurgel made mixed martial arts history by winning the Bellator Season 3 Women’s 115-pound tournament and becoming the promotion’s first – and only – female champion.

Now “The Warrior Princess” seeks to add another championship to her resume as she takes on Lindsey Marino for the WBC National Featherweight (126 pounds) championship, at Hollywood Park Casino, Aug. 16.

Gurgel, like many female MMA fighters has made the transition to kickboxing and Muay Thai. She made her professional debut earlier this year is coming off back-to-back wins over Jessica Gladstone and Linda Aguilar. In her both of her fights she has shown some good clinch work as well as great striking.

Marino also comes into the fight with a 2-0 record including a recent win over Xiong Jingnan. She also fought as an amateur earlier in her career, winning a West Coast Flyweight regional title back in 2009.

This is a good opportunity for Gurgel and while it’s not a world championship it’s a step in the right direction. I’ve said before but withe rise in popularity of Muay Thai and kickboxing promotions, specifically Lion Fight – which has two women champions – and Glory World Series – which hosted it’s first women’s fight this year – women have a chance to make a living in these sports, even though they have been around for a long time.

For Gurgel this title win will not only put her on a road to fighting for a world championship, but also it will also add to her legacy as a great combat sports athlete.
