After securing one of the best comebacks of the year against Mike King in Dublin, Cathal Pendred is set to meet tough Russian Gasan Umalatov at UFC Fight Night 53. The card is held on October 4, with welterweights Gunnar Nelson and Rick Story squaring off in the main event at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
Former Cage Warriors champion Cathal Pendred recently took part in The Ultimate Fighter 19 as part of Team Penn, reaching the semi finals in the middleweight bracket, losing a close split decision to eventual winner Eddie Gordon. The Irish fan favourite made his eagerly awaited UFC debut in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, and faced a ton of adversity in the first round.
After being rocked early and often and almost getting caught in a choke, Pendred bounced back in the second round against an evidently gassed Mike King, choking him unconscious to grab a win in his first appearance inside the Octagon. 14-2-1 as a pro, Pendred is unbeaten in his last nine, with wins over current-or-former UFC competitors in Che Mills, Nico Musoke and David Bielkheden as part of the impressive run.
Pendred will, as expected, return to the welterweight division and is set to meet Gasan Umalatov, who bounced back from a poor showing in his UFC debut with a decision win over welterweight veteran Paulo Thiago. The 31 year-old has won nine of his last eleven bouts, and will look for his second win inside the Octagon.
The Russian Grappling champion is, like most Russians currently competing in the UFC, known for his strength and grappling pedigree, and this could prove dangerous for ‘The Punisher’. Both men will look for their second UFC win in a bout likely to take place on the undercard of the event.
Also announced recently for the card is a featherweight bout between Chan Sung Jung and Akira Corassani, with the October card close to completion.
