Chan Sung Jung will fight for the first time in over a year when he squares off with Akira Corassani at UFC Fight Night 53 in Stockholm, Sweden. The exciting South Korean last fought in August 2013 in a losing effort for the title against Jose Aldo, with Corassani also losing his last fight in an entertaining battle with Dustin Poirier.
Jung, most commonly known by his nickname ‘The Korean Zombie’, has earned the reputation of being one of the most entertaining fighters on the UFC roster. 13-4 as a professional, Jung was on a three-fight winning streak going into his bout for the title against Aldo, defeating Leonard Garcia via the UFC’s only ever twister submission, Mark Hominick in quick fashion and Dustin Poirier in a Fight of the Year candidate.
The 27 year-old’s shot at the title ended in unfortunate fashion, with an arm injury leading to Aldo earning a TKO in the fourth round. Ranked #6 in the division, Jung will look to put himself back in title contention with a win over tough Swede Akira Corassani.
A former competitor in the Ultimate Fighter 14 house, Corassani has since earned a 3-1 record inside the Octagon, which included three wins in succession. After that winning streak, the 31 year-old earned a big step up in competition against #5 ranked Dustin Poirier and, while unsuccessful, he impressed in the first round by hurting the American on more than one occasion before being stopped in the second.
Wins over Andy Ogle, Robbie Peralta and Maximo Blanco have shown that Corassani isn’t one to sleep on in the featherweight division, and he could enter the 145lbs rankings for the first time if he gets past the highly rated Chan Sung Jung.
The featherweight bout between Chan Sung Jung and Akira Corassani is set for the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 53, which is headlined by welterweight’s Gunnar Nelson and Rick Story on October 4 at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
