Flyweight prospect Joby Sanchez has been signed by the UFC and slotted in to replace the injured Tim Elliott in a bout with Wilson Reis at UFC Fight Night 49 at BOK Centre in Tulsa, OK. The 23 year-old Jackson-Winklejohn product is fresh off a victory over UFC veteran Antonio Banuelos in August, and takes a 6-0 record into the Octagon.
Joby Sanchez has finished all six of his wins, none more impressive than his second round TKO victory over Banuelos, who was a former bantamweight contender in both the UFC and WEC. The American will fight for a second time in the space of the month after replacing Elliott on late notice.
Sanchez was scheduled to fight Matt Manzanares at RFA 18 in September, though the promotion will now seek a replacement.
Wilson Reis is scheduled to make his flyweight debut after losing a hotly contested decision against Iuri Alcantara in his last bout, his first loss in six. Reis made a successful UFC debut on late notice, defeating veteran Ivan Menjivar via unanimous decision in September. Looking to get back to winning ways, Reis is looking to re-gain the momentum of his five-fight win streak.
Reis was originally scheduled to fight #11 ranked Tim Elliott, though Elliott suffered an undisclosed injury in training less than three weeks prior to the event.
UFC Fight Night 49 is headlined by a lightweight contest between former champion Benson Henderson and Rafael dos Anjos on August 23 at BOK Centre in Tulsa, OK. Reis vs. Sanchez is set to be aired on the FOX Sports 2 preliminary card.
