In a recent appearance on Submission Radio, former two-time UFC light heavyweight and three-time heavyweight champion Randy Couture stated that he would consider a BJJ match with Fedor Emelianenko at an upcoming Metamoris event. The pairing has been seen as a dream match-up in the past, though never came to fruition, with many fans pointing to each fighter’s success as a heavyweight despite being outweighed in many of their fights.
Couture made his intentions to fight Emelianenko abundantly clear in the past, even leaving the UFC due to their inability to sign the Russian, who many consider the greatest of all time. ‘The Natural’ attempted to force the UFC to come to a co-promotion agreement with M-1 Global in order to set up a fight with Fedor, or he would alternatively leave at his contract’s end to fight the then-unbeatable heavyweight elsewhere.
The match-up never ended up happening, though the 51 year-old would be open to a bout with Fedor Emelianenko in a different sport. Metamoris recently held its fourth event and has been a surprise success since its start-up, introducing popular MMA fighters as well as world class BJJ practitioners.
With the promotion able to get the likes of Eddie Bravo, Chael Sonnen, Shinya Aoki and a whole host of big names to compete in their events, could Fedor vs. Couture finally happen?
Randy Couture had this to say on the potential match-up.
“That would be interesting and certainly given the time to prepare and get back up into good, solid grappling and wrestling shape, that would be a lot of fun and I think, you know….I’m not sure how active Fedor is at this stage, you know him being retired as well, but I’m certainly not opposed to an idea like that.”
Couture retired from mixed martial arts in 2011, and went on to appear on Bellator’s inaugural Fight Master series. He has since been promoting his latest venture in the acting world, taking a key role once again in the third instalment of the Expendables series.
