The already heavily criticised UFC 177 card has received another body blow, as a heavyweight main card bout between Ruslan Magomedov and Richard Odoms has been forced off the card after Odoms suffered an undisclosed injury during training. Taking its place will by a lightweight contest between Justin Edwards and Yancy Medeiros.
The card has already lost its co-main event and, incidentally, a second title fight that was scheduled for the card after Demetrious Johnson’s title defence against Chris Cariaso was moved to UFC 178. The event’s co-main event is now a lightweight bout between Danny Castillo and Tony Ferguson, who are both coming off impressive finishes in their last Octagon appearance.
Ruslan Magomedov will fight a yet-to-be-determined opponent on an upcoming card as the late notice nature of the withdrawal has left the UFC struggling to find an adequate replacement. The once-beaten Russian prospect made a successful UFC debut in his bout with then-unbeaten Viktor Pesta, and also has wins over Tim Sylvia and Ricco Rodriguez on his resumé.
Now slotted into the main card will be a lightweight tilt between Yancy Medeiros and Justin Edwards, a surprise choice considering the recent form of the fighters in question. Medeiros is yet to win in his first three Octagon bouts, going 0-2 (1 NC) after joining the promotion with a 9-0 record. Edwards has lost his last two in a less-than spectacular 2-4 Octagon stint.
As a result, the bantamweight contest between Joe Soto and Anthony Birchak has been bumped up, with a lightweight fight between Chris Wade and Cain Carrizosa taking place on UFC Fight Pass.
