Shinya Aoki Submits Kamal Shalorus to Defend ONE FC Lightweight Title

Shinya Aoki (36-6, 1 NC) headlined ONE FC 19: Reign of Champions, defending his ONE FC lightweight title for the first time against Kamal Shalorus (9-3-2), in the final of three title bouts on the card.

Aoki became the only man on this night to keep and successfully defend his ONE FC title.

Aoki won the inaugural ONE FC lightweight title back in 2012, submitting Arnaud Lepont in the first round, the grappling wizard had not defended his belt until today, but had competed and went 2-0 in ONE FC in non-title bouts following his title victory.

Shalorus came over to ONE FC following an successful stint in the UFC, going 0-3, but the ‘Prince of Persia’ quickly won his first two bouts over Eduard Folayang and Ariel Sexton to earn this title shot at Aoki.

The Iranian national wrestling champion, showed little resistance as Aoki was able to take him down within 30 seconds into the bout, with a double leg. Shalorus tried to neutralize Aoki by holding his head down for a minute, but Aoki got out and mounted Shalorus.

Jumping onto the back of Shalorus, the submission artist made it look easy, applying the rear naked choke on Kamal Shalorus and forcing him to tap twice on separate occasions before the referee stepped in.

Shinya Aoki celebrated a successful title defense by performing push ups in the middle of the cage, and screaming to the crowd in Dubai.

“To be honest I was really scared to get into the fight, so I practiced really hard for a few months,” Aoki said.

“I’ll protect the belt at lightweight and my friend Herbert [Burns] will go for the featherweight championship.
