Two featherweight bouts have been announced for UFC 179 on Oct. 25 at the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro.
Team Alpha Male’s Andre Fili (13-2) will take on Felipe Arantes (16-6-1, 2 NC). Most of their wins end via strikes so this fight is bound to be a stand-up war.
Fili had his 9-fight winning streak snapped in his last fight, losing to Max Holloway via third-round Guillotine back in April at UFC 172. He made his UFC debut in the fight before, earning a second-round TKO over Jeremy Larsen in a catchweight bout at UFC 166, due to replacing Charles Oliveira on short notice.
“Touchy” was scheduled to fight at UFC Fight Night 50 against Sean Soriano, but was forced out due to an injury. He has earned plenty of hype from competing at Tachi Palace Fights and being a part of Team Alpha Male. Fili has lived up to the expectations and looks to continue doing so in his next fight when he joins teammate, Chad Mendes in hostile territory.
Arantes is coming off a Unanimous Decision win over Maximo Blanco back in February at UFC Fight Night 36. He has been winning every other fight since entering the UFC in 2011. However, with “Sertanejo” winning his last fight, he could really gain some momentum and start his first streak with a win over a huge prospect like Fili.
Also at UFC 179, #11 UFC Featherweight, Jeremy Stephens (23-10) will take on rising Brazilian, Lucas Martin (15-1). This is another featherweight striking battle with Zuffa Bonuses written all over it.
In the Fight of the Night at UFC Fight Night 44, Stephens went to the war with #2 UFC Featherweight, Cub Swanson. Unfortunately, his 3-fight winning streak came to an end, losing via Unanimous Decision. However, “Lil’ Heathen” didn’t drop much as he showed he could hang with a Top 3 UFC Featherweight.
Prior to the loss, he earned Unanimous Decisions over Estevan Payan and Darren Elkins, and knocked out Rony Jason since moving down to 145 lbs. It was evident Stephens found his weight class.
After a one-fight sting at bantamweight, Lucas Martins returned to featherweight to earn a Performance of the Night at UFC Fight Night 45, knocking out Alex White in the third round. He has won three consecutive since losing his first fight and UFC debut to Edson Barboza.
In addition to the two featherweight fights announced today, Scott Jorgensen vs. Wilson Reis, Glover Teixeira vs. Phil Davis, and the UFC Featherweight Championship Rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes will all take place at UFC 179.
