After dropping his return to the welterweight division to John Hathaway at UFC 114, many speculated that former lightweight title contender Diego Sanchez would return to 155.
Sanchez must have other plans as he will stay at 170-pounds and face welterweight Paulo Thiago at UFC 121. UFC 121 is expected to be held October 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. He has also moved back to New Mexico and now trains at Albuquerque Kickboxing & Mixed Martial Arts, which is not affiliated with Greg Jackson.
Both fighters are coming off of losses. Sanchez has suffered back-to-back losses to BJ [...]
On August 7th, UFC welterweight Dustin “McLovin’” Hazelett will step into the octagon for the first time since a loss in January to Paul Daley. In the bout, Hazelett suffered a broken orbital bone that was expected to keep him out for a lengthy amount of time.
But McLovin’s determination to get back in the cage has him facing off against Rick Story at UFC 117, against doctor’s advice.
“There’s always concerns,” Hazelett stated on MMA Junkie Radio. “Even before I started fighting there were concerns because clearly it’s a dangerous sport. It’s not tap dancing, but this is what [...]
Brock Lesnar’s win over Shane Carwin came in stunning fashion. It did not shock people that Lesnar handed Carwin the first defeat of his career, but the method of victory was the surprise.
Lesnar defeated Carwin by submission.
His jiu jitsu coach, Rodrigo Comprido, was part of an interview with Gracie Mag and this is what he had to say about Lesnar’s arm-triangle victory:
You can’t succeed in MMA without knowing Jiu-Jitsu. Brock has been training with me for two years and has evolved a lot. I feel that was clear in his fight against Mir. In this fight he used the right [...]
Brock Lesnar handed Shane Carwin the first loss of his career this past Saturday on the way to becoming the UFC’s undisputed heavyweight champion. Carwin posts from time to time on the popular mixed martial arts forum, The Underground, and he extended his congrats to Lesnar.
He showed the heart of a Champion last night. Most men would fold under that kind of pressure.
I really appreciate all the support and messages. I am honored to have had the chance to fight for the belt and will be working my ass off to get another shot.
There are a lot [...]
UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (5-1) had an incredible title defense in his last outing as he earned submission of the night honors over number one contender Shane Carwin. We all know that undefeated Cain Velasquez (8-0) will be Lesnar’s next test, but it looks like the match could come sooner than anticipated.
Health permitting, the fight will take place at the Canseco Fieldhouse on September 25th in Indianapolis, Indiana.
This will be the first time that the UFC has traveled to Indiana, who has recently regulated MMA.
Velasquez has been on the shelf since February anxiously awaiting the winner of Lesnar-Carwin. He [...]
In what is being billed the “biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history,” current champion Brock Lesnar and interim champ Shane Carwin will do battle in the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas to unify the organization’s heavyweight strap.
Lesnar has been out of action for almost a year, since manhandling Frank Mir — the same opponent that Shane Carwin disposed of in March. Carwin is undefeated — 12-0 — with all twelve of his wins coming in the first-round. Lesnar will look to change that pattern and use his superior wrestling to hand Carwin the first loss of his career.
The night’s [...]
UFC bans vuvuzelas from UFC 116
Unless you have been living under a rock or had the luxury of a mute button over the past month, you have heard the angry swarm of bees during every broadcast at the World Cup in South Africa. That sound — a vuvuzela — has become more popular and fans have been bringing the horns with them to various sporting events.
However, don’t expect to hear the sound anytime soon near an octagon. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has banned the horn for their upcoming event, “UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin.”
“This decision was pretty simple for me,” president Dana White said on [...]
Fan-favorite and mixed martial arts legend Wanderlei Silva was scheduled to face Japanese superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama at the upcoming “UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin” on July 3rd.
Silva is coming off of a win against Michael Bisping, but he suffered fractured ribs during training and has been forced to withdraw from his bout. Akiyama will remain on the fight card.
According to MMAjunkie.com, TUF alum Chris Leben has verbally agreed to step in as Silva’s replacement and face off against Akiyama in just two weeks. The report has since been confirmed by multiple sources. Not only will Leben be stepping up on [...]
