Chan Sung Jung defeated Dustin Poirier by d’Arce choke at UFC on Fuel TV Tuesday and looked absolutely amazing. The Korean Zombie was able to get submissions, flying strikes and a ton of huge shots before ultimately using a flying knee to get the submission. He has now put himself in position to face the winner of Aldo-Koch for the featherweight title.

The Korean Zombie looked incredible last night, completely different than the brawler he has become known as. He was landing crisp strikes, avoiding takedowns and nearly submitted Poirier three times prior to the d’Arce choke.

In his fight against Mark Hominick we thought he got a lucky punch after Hominick threw the only not technical strike he has ever thrown, but now we see he’s improved immensely since the first Leonard Garcia fight.

Obviously Jung will need to improve his cardio, but he has the heart to hang with Aldo. I wouldn’t give him much of a shot to defeat the champ, but then again I wasn’t giving him much of a shot against Poirier either. Jung’s stand up game has gotten a lot crisper, he has learned to avoid the takedowns and even worked some reversals against Poirier.

In a fight against Aldo the key for The Korean Zombie would be to avoid the explosiveness of the champion. He would want to get inside the Brazilian and suck him into a brawl. Maybe Jung would be able to take him down and get a submission.

If this truly was a No. 1 contender fight Chan Sung Jung cemented his status as the No. 1 contender. He put on a hell of a show and came out with a very impressive win. I don’t give The Korean Zombie much of a chance in a title fight, but after Tuesday I’m giving him a lot more of a chance than before.

We will see the first Tuesday card in a long time with the “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung facing off against Dustin Poirier possibly for the chance to face the winner of Aldo-Koch for the featherweight title.

Donald Cerrone vs. Jeremy Stephens

This is a great fight. I would even argue it could headline this event based on the name value on Stephens and Cerrone. Both fighters love to stand and bang and we’ve seen how good Stephens can be when he comes off a loss. Cerrone is also coming off a tough loss to Nate Diaz, but didn’t look at his best in that fight. This is a step down in competition for him, but a great fight.

Prediction: Cerrone via unanimous decision

Amir Sadollah vs. Jorge Lopez

Sadollah has had is ups and downs since winning The Ultimate Fighter. He hasn’t had a lot of fights due to injuries and needs a win to show he belongs. Lopez is in his second UFC fight and this could be make or break for his UFC career. He lost his debut and a win could cause him to be cut. If Sadollah hadn’t won TUF he would be on the chopping block too, but still is in serious trouble of being a draw on only name.

Prediction: Sadollah via unanimous decision

Chan Sung Jung vs. Dustin Poirier

The Korean Zombie has had a meteoric rise up the featherweight division. After suffering two straight losses to end his WEC career, he has won two straight, most recently against former No. 1 contender, Mark Hominick. Poirier is undefeated in his UFC career and at 23 years old can make a huge statement that he is a force as he grows. This fight has huge title implications, especially with the disarray at featherweight. A win for either could mark a title shot next.

Prediction: Poirier via unanimous decision

Jose Aldo is going to fight Eric Koch at UFC 149, but after that fight the featherweight division is very blurry. Aldo has run through his opponents, most recently Chad Mendes, and Koch is really the last fight for him. He could face Hatsu Hioki if Hioki defeats Lamas, but that may be the last fight for Aldo.

Chan Sung Jung and Dustin Poirier aren’t ready for a title shot, but may be thrust into that shot if no one steps up to fight Aldo. The most interesting fight for Aldo at featherweight is Frankie Edgar, but Edgar still wants to stay at lightweight. Edgar has the wrestling and technical boxing to challenge Aldo, but needs to make the drop down. Something that Dana White has been begging for Edgar to do recently.

It’s not that the featherweight is a weak division, there just aren’t too many fighters that are ready to challenge for the belt. Dennis Bermudez looked great in his fight against Pablo Garza and nearly finished Diego Brandao at The Ultimate Fighter 14 finale.

Brandao is another great prospect, but another who isn’t ready. He has huge hands and outstanding jiu-jitsu, which he showed off by arm barring Bermudez after nearly being finished himself.

Currently the featherweight division is in limbo after Koch and Hioki, but it is a quality division. While Frankie Edgar may be the only fight fans want to see against Aldo right now, in one or two years there could be an influx of fighters ready to take the belt from the Brazilian.
