Former UFC Middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen made headlines after his loss to light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. He wants to step out of his role as a fighter and buy the WWE.

Apr 26, 2013; Newark, NJ, USA; Chael Sonnen (right) is interviewed by Joe Rogan after being weighed in for his light heavyweight title bout against Jon Jones (not pictured) at the Prudential Center.
Sonnen’s representatives have said the fighter is serious about his intentions to buy the sports entertainment company, while WWE representatives said the company is not for sale. Although some critics may see this as a joke or a publicity stunt, I think WWE CEO Vince McMahon should put up the “For Sale” sign and let Sonnen buy the company.

It is no secret that Sonnen is a fan of professional wrestling. His trash talking is on par with some of the best promo guys in professional wrestling. His wrestling and MMA backgrounds would be a welcome addition to the squared circle. Even though he is would be the owner, Sonnen would still be allowed to participate in storylines.

As owner, he could feud with top WWE superstars like John Cena, Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar. In addition to singles competition, he could also help revitalize the stale tag team division by teaming up with his friend C.M. Punk. The duo could claim tag team gold in a manner of months.

Sonnen could also make an impact behind the scenes. With his knowledge of past professional wrestling, he could help bring second-tier championships, like the Intercontinental and United States, titles back to prominence. He could even help bring the action back to the Divas’ division.

Besides helping out the promotion, Sonnen’s presence could help bring together WWE and UFC fans, who can sometimes be at odds due to the differences between professional wrestling and mixed martial arts.

So please Mr. McMahon, for the good of sports and entertainment, let Sonnen buy the WWE.

What storyline would you like to see Sonnen participate in? Answer with a comment below or send a tweet to @alstover.

Tuesday the UFC announced possibly the biggest news in recent Ultimate Fighter history, besides the move to FX, when it was announced Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen would be the next coaches of The Ultimate Fighter. The decision was met with anger and excitement from fans, but none the less this is a massive decision from the UFC.

The argument against is based on the fact that Chael Sonnen is coming off a loss to Anderson Silva at middleweight. He hasn’t fought at light heavyweight since he lost to Renato Sobral at UFC 55 and with so many fighters that seem ahead of Sonnen for a title shot (see Machida, Lyoto and Henderson, Dan) it’s a bit of a shock that he earns the call.

But let’s remember the UFC gives fans the fights they want to see and since Sonnen started his trash talking towards Jones the fight has been getting closer to reality. It was first a possibility at UFC 151 after Henderson was forced out with an injury, but Jones turned down the opportunity claiming Sonnen had not earned the shot.

Before just screaming that he hasn’t earned the shot let’s remember what he did at middleweight. He’s the only man that came remotely close to beating Anderson Silva and, if not for a questionable spinning elbow, we can’t know how the second fight goes. Even with those two losses Sonnen is the perennial No. 1 contender at middleweight.

Fans may argue that giving Sonnen the fight because he talked his way to the top makes the UFC look like WWE, but it’s not as if Sonnen hasn’t been successful. It’s not just fans either, Dan Henderson was noticeably upset on Twitter after the Ultimate Fighter announcement.

Let’s make one thing clear though. Sonnen is a top fighter in the UFC, the promotion is established enough to where this fight won’t hurt the organization. We’ve seen questionable title fights before (Silva-Maia anyone?) and the sport wasn’t hurt. The next season of TUF will be interesting and fans will enjoy it. Fox will be moving the Ultimate Fighter off Friday’s so that will help also and, who knows, maybe Sonnen can pull the upset.

Three weeks after the cancellation UFC 151 Jon Jones finally fought Vitor Belfort at UFC 152. For the first time in his UFC career we saw Jon Jones in a difficult position when Belfort nearly ended the fight in the first round with an arm bar. Jones was able to get out of the submission and finish Belfort with an Americana in the fourth round.

For now we’re left with the question of who will challenge Jones next for the light heavyweight belt. Dana White already stated that Lyoto Machida will not earn the next title shot after turning down a rematch with Jones at UFC 152 so who is next?

Dan Henderson:

Hendo was supposed to face Jones at UFC 151, but a partial torn MCL forced Henderson out of the bout. There have been rumors that he will face Machida in a No. 1 contender bout, but no contract has been signed at the moment. Henderson is always one punch away from finishing an opponent with that huge right hand of his, but in order to do that he would need to get inside Jones range. We saw Jones negate the knockout risk from Belfort by using takedowns and this could be something he would do again in a fight with Henderson although Henderson is a more accomplished wrestler.

Chael Sonnen:

Sonnen could be the dark horse candidate to challenge Jones. He hasn’t fought at light heavyweight since he moved up in weight, but demand may force the issue. Sonnen is one of the best wrestlers in mixed martial arts, but again it’s an issue of getting inside the range of Jones. We saw Sonnen have success with this against Anderson Silva and it’s hard not to assume he would try the same game plan against Jones. He has been very susceptible to the submission in his career and this is something Jones would likely attempt to take advantage of.

Alexander Gustafsson-Shogun Rua winner:

Gustafsson could be the perfect foil to Jon Jones. He is a very tall and lanky fighter that could stand at range and strike with Jones. Gustafsson isn’t as polished as Jones, but he has looked outstanding in his last couple fights. He has the ability to finish fights via knockout or submisssion and could present some serious problems for Jones.

Shogun, on the other hand, will need to put on a much better performance than in his first fight with Jones. He was dominated on the feet and ground and was never able to work any offense against Jones. Rua would likely need to rely on a miracle submission or knockout to defeat the champion because we have seen him gas in the later rounds of fights.
