NFL great Herschel Walker made his anticipated mixed martial arts debut tonight at Strikeforce: Miami in a heavyweight match up against Greg Nagy.
Heading into the bout there was a lot of speculation regarding Walker. The former Heisman Trophy winner is 47 years old, but that hasn’t stopped himself from following a passion of his.
“I’ve been training for several years. I would play college football games on Saturday and then compete in martial arts tournaments on Sunday after church. I’m now looking forward to opening up another chapter in my life and to competing in MMA,” said Walker leading up to his fight.
Walker started off the bout by putting on a show. He showed a beautiful jab that cut Nagy and then he displayed some showmanship as he began trash-talking and showboating in the cage.
Walker stuffed a takedown by Nagy and showed some surprising ground work as he took Nagy’s back and delivered some brutal ground and pound.
The NFL great got tangled up on the ground after Nagy used his flexibility and locked in a heel hook. Walker rolled out of the submission attempt perfectly as he once again got back to top position. Walker remained poised throughout the bout.
Round two started off with Herschel displaying even more skill. He scored an early takedown and then nearly sunk in a rear-naked choke, then transitioned to full mount. Walker smothered Nagy throughout the round and the second-round was never in question.
Walker is still very raw as a fighter, but he showed impressive awareness over the course of the fight auntil nd he maintained his composure. The third and final round was the story of the fight. Walker got on Nagy’s back and rained down blow after blow until the referee was forced to stop the bout. It was a very impressive mixed martial arts debut for Walker.
