Bellator 180: Injury Forces Ryan Bader Into Title Fight Against Phil Davis

A very interesting rematch is set to be heading to New York at Bellator 180 later this year.

Bellator’s light heavyweight King, Phil Davis, will be making his first title defence against a brand new opponent on June 24 inside Madison Square Garden.

The opponent? A man he is very familiar with as they have fought before, previously under the UFC banner.

Davis will now meet Ryan Bader, the newest member of the promotion’s roster after his original opponent King Mo pulled out of their fight due to injury. The fight was announced on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour by Davis himself.

These two 205’ers fought one another back in 2015 where it was Bader who would walk away with the win after 15 gruelling minutes. After the loss, Davis was cut from the UFC and signed by Bellator.

Since his arrival, Davis has gone undefeated through four fights and is now the ruler of the 205-pound division. He won the Bellator light heavyweight Grand Prix by defeating Emmanuel Newton and Francis Carmont on the same night. His most recent wins have come against King Mo and Liam McGeary who he beat to become the champion.

As for Ryan Bader, he has been on an impressive run himself defeating Rashad Evans, Ilir Latifi and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The former Ultimate Fighter winner became a free agent last November and will be looking to win gold in his Bellator debut against Davis.

Bellator 180 is set to take place on June 24 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The event is to be shown on Spike TV before Bellator NYC, the pay-per-card headlined by a highly anticipated fight between bitter rivals Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva.
