Ronda Rousey appeared on the NBC drama Blindspot as an inmate who is in the same prison as one of the main characters on the show.
Ronda Rousey’s fighting future may be shrouded in mystery, however, she made her largest appearance since her last UFC outing in December by appearing on the NBC drama Blindspot.
Her appearance had been teased for several months however her episode did not air until this Wednesday.
Rousey’s character, Devon Penberthy, served as the “villain of the week” on the hit NBC show. Devon’s storyline is that she is an inmate who’s boyfriend is a part of the terrorist cell “Sandstorm” who are the main antagonists of the season. Early into the introduction of the character, we see Rousey’s character in a well-choreographed fight scene featuring several inmates.
In the episode, Zapata and her team stage a breakout from the prison. Upon their escape, Devon’s boyfriend identifies Zapata as an undercover agent and take her hostage. The climax has the team focused on Zapata’s rescue and the capture of Parker which leads to the much-anticipated fight scene between Devon and Jane Doe, played by series lead Jamie Alexander.
Both NBC and Rousey had been heavily promoting her appearance. Earlier Wednesday, Rousey took over the official NBC Instagram account where she posted several behind the scenes photos from the set of the show.
“Rowdy” has been very sparse on social media and the public eye since her loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207. The former champion made headlines by appearing at the Standing Rock protests earlier this year. Last month, she announced that she was engaged to UFC heavyweight Travis Browne.
Rousey took the world by storm by becoming the first female champion in the UFC in 2013. She reeled off six consecutive victories, twice under an incredible 20 seconds.
She became the biggest star in the promotion over the course of her reign, appearing seemingly nonstop on different magazines, talk shows, and films. She lost her title in shocking fashion at the height of her popularity against Holly Holm in 2015. The former champion has yet to announce whether or not she will be returning to MMA or what is next for her career.
